The
Spider MM, with a more compressed engine than the 202, was the
result of Giovanni Savonuzzi's joint effort with Pietro Dusio's
business. The aluminium body and the tubular chassis made it very
light. The engine was based on the ordinary Fiat 1100, but the
cylinder block, modified by Dusio, increased so much in power
that the MM managed to take the lead in many races. After the
1947 Mille Miglia, it was called "Nuvolari type", to celebrate
the victory of the "flying racer from Mantua". At the wheel of
an extra-light 202, "Nivola" carried out one of his epic deeds,
at the lead of the race as far as Turin, ahead of more powerful
cars than his 1100cc. Only along the 240 km motorway to Brescia,
slowed down by pouring rain, he had to give way to the Touring
compact saloon Alfa Romeo-engined racer - three times as much
powerful as his own - driven by Romano Biondetti. However second,
he was the true moral victor of that Mille Miglia. Engine:
